Almost Burned Our '77 Down! Easy Help Please...

Our car is a late production car that uses the driver's side door lock cylinder to activate the alarm. I finally got a key made for it so we can actually lock the car. I tried to activate the alarm with it, but was not successfull.

In trying to figure out what was happening to cause it not to work, I discovered that the wire to the hood alarm switch had been cut and left hanging by a previous owner. Thinking this might be the problem, I hooked it back up, and walked back to the drivers side door to activate the alarm.

Imagine my surprise when I saw smoke pouring from under the dash! Of course the first thing I did was unhook the negative cable from the battery, and then grab a fire extinguisher just in case.

Turns out that a wire that comes off of the drivers side door jamb goes to the hood alarm switch, and then on to the starter. This wire was melted to at least some extent the entire length of the wire. Fortunately there is no other damage.

From what I can tell from my handy dandy Lectric Limited schematic, the wire from the hood alarm switch goes to a ground, but it really doesn't show which where. So my question is, does anyone know which of the terminals on the starter,if any, the hood alarm switch should go to? Or does it just ground to the motor somewhere?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

    Cheers!

Wendell - I once had a late production 77 we bought new, and the door lock activated alarm was useless. It would go off for no reason, from heat in the sun, etc. I disconnected it. I may still have the 77 shop manual, but it may show the fender alarm switch. Our car was built in Aug 77 and this was actually a 78 feature that was new as I recall, an improvment I am sure... If '77 wiring is similar to '73 the answer to your question might be 'neither'. My hood switch wiring immediately disappears into the wiring harness and does not attach to either the starter solenoid or a ground on the motor. I can't think of any reason why it would be wired to the starter.

I met a guy a couple of weeks ago who has a '78 pace car that has the problems you've outlined. So I guess maybe I'll leave mine disconnected. But since my car is my daily driver now, I guess I need to get something on there.
