Has anyone had any experieince with the "improved OEM" cross shaft gear replacement I have seen offerd by Mid America and others? From what I can tell it is a brass coupler with needle bearings surrounding the cross gear. I assume this "system" would prevent runout associated with the brass coupler, and eleminate end play problems associated with the cross gear?...

any thoughts or experience appreciated.

The device is manufactured by Hi-Tech Innovations of Panorama City, FL. It will eliminate wear of the cross gear adapter but, by itself, it has no effect on end play or thrust control. You still need to use some sort of a device in the end of the housing bore to do that. That could be the brass thrust button also manufactured by Hi-Tech, the stock-type nylon button (used on PRODUCTION and SERVICE distributors after about 1970), or some other device.

The roller bearing adapter is probably "overkill" since adapter wear is not usually a problem. However, I use the roller bearing unit; it can't hurt and I like the principle of it.
