    1967 Shoulder Belt Install-Carpet Hole?

The winter is coming to an end and I will see my 1967 again in the next week or so. One of my immediate projects is to install shoulder belts that I acquired over the winter. I realize they are not correct for my car but it is a safety issue so bear with me. How do I get those mounting bolts through the carpet? Drill a hole in the carpet? Slit with an Xacto knife? How did GM do it? And yes the brackets are on the body.

definitly don't try drilling a hole in any carpet. you'll ruin it. take a piece of old loop carpet and drill a hole for kicks. I usually cut carpet holes with a # 15 scalpel blade or a leather punch. Good luck, mike

Thanks Mike. I will use a scalpel, very carefully. Belated thanks for the locking gas cap. It has been re-built by a locksmith with two sets of keys. That donation was very much appreciated! Ready to go when this darned winter weather goes way. Light snow flurries still forecast for the next couple of days. But the car is coming out of the winter closet late next week. It's been 5 1/2 months and I am getting...itchy.

If the nuts are on the body when I install new carpet I take a hot old pencil soldering iron and push it up thru the nut and the carpet from the bottom. The one I use is 1/2' in diameter and the heat seals the fibers and makes the right size hole in a heartbeat. The only bad thing is the job stinks up the shop. Lyle

I'm not sure I would try that approach although it does make sense.

The nice part is its fast and the sealed hole stays open the next time you remove the seats.
