Last time I removed an engine out of my '67, I rented a hoist with a long reach that enabled me to start with the chain centered over the engine, and it worked very well. I am preparing to remove the engine out of a '66 and can't find one with a reach of more than 48", which won't let me center the chain over the engine. I have a "leveler" to adjust the load, but I'd like to start with the chain centered on the engine and make any adjustments from there. If I use the one I found, the chain from the arm will be about 8" forward of center when I hook it up.

Re: '66 BB ENGINE REMOVAL/HOIST REACH
Last time I pulled and installed a engine in my 70 I rented a engine hoist from U-Haul. I did not even remove the hood. Came in from the passenger side with the hoist after removing the front tire and lifted it out leaving the turbo 400 in the car. Did not even remove the radiator and its big shroud. Really pretty easy. The air conditioner compressor was left connected also.- Top

Re: '66 BB ENGINE REMOVAL/HOIST REACH
I have a run-of-the-mill 2-ton engine hoist (and a leveler), and have always pulled (complete engine/trans as a unit) from the side, with the car on jackstands and front tire removed; never had a problem. Have never pulled from the front.- Top
