    Black Wheel Paint C2 1965-1966

I have what I believe to be a 1965 wheel with original paint. It's what I would call a semi-gloss black. There is not very much paint and lots of press markings and etc. showing "behind" the paint. Inside, Back and front all appear to be the same color. Sound right?

There is also some hardened caulk (or the like) that appears to have drained from the disk to outer rim connection to the the outer rim (in one area). I have seen this one other wheels as I cleaned them up.

I've seen 1967 style wheels with almost a "bead" of caulk. Was some sort of primer or caulk used? If so, why and how applied?

    Thanks
    Tom D.

    Tom -

Sounds like a service replacement wheel - they were dip-primed so they wouldn't rust in warehouse storage, and it was left up to the dealer/purchaser to actually paint the show surface. It was quite common for wheels dip-primed either at St. Louis or at the regional parts depots (they had dip-prime systems for wheels and sheet metal) to have runs, pools, and ugly blisters where paint was trapped when the parts were baked after dipping.

Tom, John is correct on the dip process. The wheels were dipped in what was basically 1050104, GM reconditionng paint which was a semi flat black and then the face side was spray painted gloss black enamel. There was almost always a large run and at times, a puddle of 104 in the rim edge.
