I occasionally have a problem with the signal cancel action on my '57. The flasher cancels fine but it does not completely go to the neutral position thus, the brake light does not work on the side that was flashing. This does not happen all the time. Any suggestions as to the solution.....thanks

Re: '57 Turn signal cancel problem
My 61 suffered from the same problem. It was because the internals of the switch itself (in the Cup) wouldn't return to center. I attempted installing the flat spring new and also reworked the cancelling bushings per an article in the restorer. However I finally had to replace the switch itself. Has worked fine since. Re: '57 Turn signal cancel problem
The TS assy on straight axle cars is akin to a Swiss watch.... The physical switch has NO DETENT position(s). It relies on the mechanics of the housing to re-position the switch to dead nuts center!
Any 'slop' in the physical mount of the switch housing to the steering column will thwart proper function. Any 'slop' in internal fasteners holding return springs, centering spring, cancelling mechanism in their proper geometry inside the TS housing will also defeat proper function.
Just about any 'driver' class straight axle car you walk up to will exhibit the kind of 'funny' operation that's mentioned in this thread. But, visit a Duntov, Mark of Excellence Award winning equivalent car, lovingly restored with factory fresh parts that had to pass an NCRS Performance Verification test and watch the cancelling mechanism SNAP directly home/center without hesitation!
Yes, the design actually DID work when everything was fresh/new. But, over 40-50 years of use/abuse, things wear out and the basic design is INTOLERANT of slop....- Top
