C2 '63 rear drum brakes - not an exact fit.

Putting the rear drum brakes back on after spindle bearings, etc. All springs and etc. look correct. The parking brake adjuster is backed fully off and the pistons in the wheel cyl. looked fine when off the car.

Problem is the right side brake shoes just don't seem to snug up to the top like they did on the left side. When one is in the correct position against the top "mounting post", the other will push away at the top.

The bar across the top of the spindle (from shoe to shoe)appears to be seated fine. I have another (original) assembly to look at, and can't see that I did anything wrong. However, I can only get the drum on when the adjuster is fully backed off. Even with that, it's tight on the right.

On my next look-see, I am going to compare the length of the exposed parking brake cable (with the other side).

What is the shoe source? The top of the shoes should be pulled back to the anchor pin by the return springs. It sounds like you are saying they are not.

All I can suggest is to pull the shoes and other components and compare them side to side. Could be there is something wrong with a shoe or other component.

Wear can cause a ridge on the backing plate shoe pads that can cause a shoe to hang up. If there is a noticeable ridge on any of the backing plate shoe pads, dress it down with a file or sandpaper.

      Tom,

Also verify you have a forward and rear shoe on each side. I seem to remember there being a only slight difference. Two of the same shoes on each side may cause the conditions you describe.

          Thanks!

The rear show has the parking brake lever attached. I did not remove it from when I took them off.

Re: C2 '63 rear drum brakes - Fixed!

The emergency brake cable was not balanced - so the lever was still being pulled by the cable on the right side. I have balanced the cable and things went together much better this time. Thanks to all who replied or wrote to me. Tom D.

                Tom,

You probably already know this and it was mentioned above. But be sure to have the shoe with the smaller pad (Primary) on it on the front side of the wheel. Each wheel has two different shoes. On all 4 the smaller pad goes to the front.

                Joe..

You can see in the pic below that the shoe on the left (front side) is different than the shoe on the right.
