    1963 Brake Question

    Folks,

Many of you know that I am restoring my 1963 Z06. Well, was putting brakes back on yesterday afternoon and have run into a snag. According to the 1963 shop manual, Page 5-16 " METALLIC BRAKES, SERVICE OPERATIONS", Step 5 CAUTION, I should have an ADJUSTING SCREW SPRING that fits over the adjusting screw.

Anyone ever seen this on a car? Anyone know where I could even begin to look for this spring? I have everything else to put this car back together brake-wise. In fact, didn't even think anything about that spring until we were following the shop manual step-by-step!

FYI - am I getting TOO ANAL here and should I just press on putting this car back together. Still trying to make the Carolina Regional and looking real iffy now.

    Rick-----

In the 63-64 HD drum brake configuration, the lower brake shoe pull-back spring actually also encircled the brake adjusting screw. In other words, the brake adjusting screw went through the COILED SECTION of the spring. The spring was GM #5462023, but it was discontinued in January, 1982. I don't think that this piece is reproduced, either. Four (4) of these are required per car as they were used front and rear.

      Hi rick,
You need the special ajusters & special bottle springs for the z06 brake ajuster system, You have to install the ajuster at right way so they will ajust the proper way, I think I told you about that when you didn,t know how to put on the z06 brake shoes, there a lot different then your stock brake system ,the ajuster go inside the bottle spring, there a left side & right side ajuster, they big bucks for the ajusters & bottle springs if you can find them. Joe,

Yepper, like I said had totally forgot about that spring. Noticed when we were following the manual putting everything back together. Told Tony I would post to see what folks thought, but personally thought we should just go with what we have because I didn't believe we could find them.

          Danny,

thanks - bought CORRECT adjusters from Franz Estereicher - you know him. But they didn't come with any springs, so I assume Franz didn't have any, or assumed I had them.
