    Keen Parts CD

    Hi,
My husband and I are relatively new to NCRS and to the Corvette hobby in general. At the Florida show we picked up a Keen Parts CD catalog that I have been using. The thing I like about it is their use of diagrams to help me identify the parts - you just look at the picture and click on the part. Unfortunately, the CD isn't finished yet so all parts of the car aren't covered yet.

Most of the time, we don't know the technical name of the thingajiggy we need. Does anybody know of a similar resource that would help me identify parts graphically? Thanks.

What you want is an old parts illustration book. They were used by the service and parts departments at the Chevy stores. Loook on E-Bay or your local and regional swap meets, they are still avaiable that way. You can also search the web or Hemmings for dealers who carry auto books, one is www.autobooksbishko.com
not cheap but hey what is?

Consider expanding your support library for 'baby' to include the AIM (assy instruction manual). This is what GM used to communicate with factory workers on how to do the final assy of the car. Each part used in that process is called out with a GM PN and the 'official' name.

Other books to consider putting in your library are the NCRS Technicial Information Manual & Judging Guide (what to judges look for? what's rare/hard to find? what's numbered/dated?) and either the Corvette Shop Manual (up to 1965) or the Chassis Service Manual (1966 and later). The CSM tells you what GM told dealership mechanics about the care and feeding of the 'beast'....

Try Doctor Rebuild's catalog. It has excellent illustrations for parts that have maybe long since disappeared completely from your car. They have some NOS parts and other repro parts, but specialize in reproducing and selling those mundane, but essential parts that no one else has.

The hard copy catalog is easier to browse, and is worth the $6 he charges (refundable on first order, I believe). The Doc also has the catalog on his website (Adobe Acrobat), but you have to now the proper name for the part (or what Doc calls it) or you'll have to do some searching in the alphabetical index. Doc is also an NCRS member, and posts here, but not recently (Are you mad at us, Doc? )

Also, get catalogs from Long Island Corvette, Paragon and Zip (etc.). You can get to these vendors online and pull up good diagrams as well. Point about the AIM above is dead on!

          Good luck.

If it is a mid-year, you can download the Long Island Corvette catalog from their web-site and it has excellent exploded views for almost everything they sell.

Jack, I have found that the nomenclature varies between the AIM, parts book, and Service manuals. Apparently the technical writers did not speak the same language.
