Anybody ever used Form-a-thread? I would like to try and repair a stripped oil pan plug thread.

Forget using it for any auto repair

The threads formed by it have no significant strength.

Form a thread works good for low strenth fasteners. It is NOT designed for any position that is critical to the operation of the vehicle. It will work on interior fasteners, trim, etc.

        Chris,

If you have the pan off the car, I'd just grind the threaded flange off the inside and braze a correct sized nut in it's place.

I agree with Jerry. The loktite directions will give you thread/nut sizes and the appropriate strength that the form a thread has. Forget about it! Great stuff for low strength applications - period. IMHO.

I used it on a cylinder head where the temp sender hole was partially stripped. After allowing it to dry, I ran a tap through it. Upon starting the car, it leaked until I tightened it quite a bit. It stopped leaking but I don't know if it'll ever come apart again. (but it has been working well for over a year to correct one of Bubba's mistakes)

I used it once years ago for a fuel pump to timing cover(magnesium) attachment bolt on my GTO. It worked great as per the directions and tightened up quite well. It lasted about 6yrs untill I sold the car and never had a problem. However there were a lot of threads in this application and if it leaked it would not have been a big issue, unlike an oil plug (with not so many threads) falling out. Everything has it's purpose and place and I would not recommend form a thread on an oil plug. I have though heard of using oversize oil plugs with great results to fix your problem. Maybe someone can comment on these??
