    Help with Starter I.D.

I just removed the starter from my '66 327/300 and re-installed one from John Pirkle. The one I removed, I thought might be from a '63 but with my limited resources on earlier mid-years, I could not find the numbers. The case has a flaw and two numbers are hard to read, but this is what I have. 110725 3 L 8 Delco Remy USA. Anyone have clues if this is off a vette or just some replacement. As usual, appreciate any comments.

Re: Help with Starter I.D. ( UPDATE)

I took another look at this starter number thru a magnifing glass. The last three number have a gouge thru. The last number is unreadable. The last readable number is either a 5 or 3. This makes the number 110723?
Does this help any with the ID of this starter? Thank You

Re: Help with Starter I.D. ( UPDATE)

Don, the starter part number should be seven digits. If we assume that your reading of "110723?" is correct, that would make the part number stamped on the starter case for a model year prior to 64 for Corvettes.

If the last number is "3", that is 1107233, then this is a starter for a 62 Corvette with manual transmission. I have no idea if such a starter even makes sense in the context of a 66 Corvette...I am only telling you what the part number would imply. Keep in mind that rebuilders may reuse cores from one model year, rebuilding them into whatever application they need without regard to stamped part numbers. If the last number is "5", then 1107235 is not a good Corvette part number, and maybe not a good part number period; I don't have the references to confirm this one way or the other.

I suggest you look closely at the last three characters following the part number. This would be a date code consisting of three closely spaced alphanumeric characters that are just slightly separated from the part number. If the 3L8 you posted earlier has been read correctly, the date of manufacture would be November 8, 1963. This date would be inconsistent with the 62 Corvette application, because the date code is too late to be an original 62 Corvette starter. It may have been installed on a 64 model in another GM product line, or it is possibly a service replacement starter for a 62 Corvette.

Re: Help with Starter I.D. ( UPDATE)

Thanks Chuck: The 3 L 8 is definitly readable and correct. The last ( 7th ) digit is gouged and completly un-readable. The first 5 digets ( 11072 ) are correct. The 6th diget is either a 3 or 5. I had never thought of the date code possibly being correct for a '62 vette. Appreciate the help.

Re: Help with Starter I.D. ( UPDATE)

The date code is INCORRECT for any 62 Corvette, which the part number (11072**) might possibly have fit.

Further, the part number (series 11072**) is INCORRECT for any Corvette after 63 MY. For example, the starter part number for 63 Corvettes is 1107242 (all engines). Then, beginning in 64, Corvette starter part numbers began the 11073** series (and higher) part numbers.

Re: Help with Starter I.D. ( UPDATE)

Thanks again Chuck. I am going to do some extra cleaning and look at it again with maybe a stronger magnifing glass under stronger light. I want to try and confirm the last three digets. Knowing the date code, it should be from around '63 but again could be from a non-corvette. Thank you
