C1 water pump nipple colors

Were the water pump nipples installed in the water pump when it was painted on the engine?

Nope - they were installed at St. Louis.

Chris - If you check the AIM - If they call out the P/N on the AIM sheet, it means they were installing the part there - in St Louis - therefore, the engine had already been painted orange in Flint. They probably didn't spend any time touching up orange paint on the engine in St Louis. I could be wrong, but common sense is on my side. Best, DC

OK, I found the upper 90 degree nipple in the AIM and it was dressed at St. Louis and therefore unpainted.

However no mention of the lower nipple. Therefore it came into the assembly plant on the water pump painted orange?

Both the upper and lower nipples were installed at St. Louis, and are zinc-plated; the upper nipple was part of the base cooling system, but the lower nipple was part of the heater system - on a '61, you'll find it shown in the FOA 101 Heater option section.
