How important is the original tank sticker???

Heres my issue...I just started to lift the body on my 69 L36 coupe and when I checked the tank sticker there was only about 50% left and barely readable. This is pretty much the only documentation that I have for the car. I say pretty much because when I bought the car in 88 one of the first things I did was pull the tank to see the sticker that I had heard so much about. Back then it was in really good shape and I took several pictures of it just because. So what do you all think...are the old pics as good as the real thing in proving that it is what it is? All thoughts on this are appreciated.

Picture is worth a thousand words if the data matchs the car....Its all good.
Print out a new one to put back on tank, and save what you can now.

Uh-oh, you're opening yourself up for some abuse on that one. In my opinion, you should be O.K. as long as there is enough of the original left to prove that the pics are in fact of it. IF there is any way to get off what's left of it (there must be experts on this out there), I would remove it and store it in a manner to prevent further deterioration. Too late now, but I would think that on even the most virgin, rare and never-to-be-driven car, the procedure is to get the sheet off the tank and put it in safe storage.

Be careful, it depends how much glue they used on the assembly line, you may totally destroy the build sheet in the process. If they used a lot of glue, you may want to consider buying a repro gas tank and safely storing the original tank and build sheet intact.

          First, do no harm.

In my opinion, a tank sticker should never be removed from its original tank.

Well thanks for your thoughts guys. I guess I messed up 15yrs ago when the sticker was still in really good shape. I had thought about removing it back then but it was glued on really good and I didn't want to wreck it. I had thought about covering it with plastic to protect it but then I thought that if water some how got it that it would be worse for it to be damp all the time. Then I thought, hey if it looks this good after 19 yrs then it should still look good after another 20 or so yrs so I'll just leave it were it belongs. I guess that was the wrong choice. I'll see what I can do with it for now and I am so glad that I took the pics of it that I did back in 88. Based on my pics do any of you guys know if a repro tank sticker can be made from the old pics? The image is very clear the text is easy to read. Thanks again.

Triple A enterprises advertises in the Driveline. They can make a repro tank sticker.
