    water pump seapage-hole

Is it normal to have the water pump show slight water seapage out of what looks like a seapage hole on the front of it?

I installed a rebuilt '62 water pump on my car many years ago. It has been driven rarely and sits alot. There is evidence of fluids coming out of what looks like a seapage hole on the front.

Do I need to rebuild or is this normal? The engine has overheated in the past at the Woodward dream cruise in stop and go traffic on hot days. Just got the radiator back from a radiator shop and they said there was quite a bit of stop leak in it and it should flow a lot better now.

    Chris,
It's time for a rebuild. The weep hole allows you to see the onset of leakage past the seal around the shaft. It will only get worse.

      Chris:

Any liquid out the weep hole means that the shaft seal is shot. This is usually closely followed by bearing failure. It's time to replace or rebuild.

In the mode of if it ain't broke. I would replace if it is continually wet. But cars that are not driven frequently may get a little weep and stain over the years. The seal is not kept well-lubricated when the car sits for extended periods, and it may seep when first started up. If after driving it, you see no evidence of seepage, I would be inclined to wait on the repair.

Definitly would not wait until it get worse. Because it will and at the most "inopportune" time.

My son (God love 'em) adoped this plan of action, and after less than a 100 miles of driving his chevy uptruck, you could have plucked the fan and shaft from the pump with a good healthy jerk. The bearings were completly shot.

Left him at a busy intersection and late to work until "good ole pops" came to tow him home.
