    MidYear Gauge Cluster Problem

Recently set my speedo and tack (only) out for repair. I finally got the cluster back in place after much bad language and nashing of teeth not to mention the bloody hands. The dash lights funtion correctly with the following exceptions. The brake, high beam and headlight indicators all are on all the time. The em brake does not influence the light, the high beam gets a little brighter when the light are on high and the headlight warning blinks till the buckets are up and then stays on. I thought this could be a ground problem so I added another ground from the cluster directly to the sub structure but it made no difference. All suggestions and responces are appreciated and Thanks. Re: MidYear Gauge Cluster Problem

You are saying that these lamps stay on even when the lights are not on? Other than they are in reasonably close proximity to each other on the cluster, the brake alarm has no connection with the others. But, the brake alarm is the only one that should be powered when the lights are not on. The high beam indicator and the HL telltale are connected by the light switch and maybe the dimmer. You should check the back of the cluster closely for any wiring that may be touching. You should check the connections and operation of the light switch, particularly the LBL wires. Check the dimmer for the proper feed to the H beam indicator. Beyond that, you will need to pull each socket and check with a VOM for proper feeds and grounding switch operation.

      Just some tests and suggestions....

Did you put the tach/speedo back into the cluster? Are the dash lights "on" when you observe the problems with the particuliar lights? If so, do those lights go out when the dash lights are "off"? Is there a remote chance that someone forgot to place the white plastic separator and cardboard tubes that surround and isolate those lights inside the cluster and you are getting "bleed" from the dash lights? If you've checked the above then you probably have a "partial short" in your wiring harness that allows those wires feeding those lights to be on. Does the problem exist with the high beams "off" and low beams "on"?

Assume all lights are dimly lit....
Does the "high beam indicator" become and remain brighter when the high beams are on?
Does the flashing headlight door indicator remain bright after flashing and the doors remain closed.
Does the E-brake light remain bright with the E-brake on?
Do they become brighter individually? if the above are all true I believe you have the plastic/cardboard missing in the cluster. You should be able to look into the holes where those bulbs would be inserted and see both the cardboard tubes and the white plastic and they will be separated from each other.
      Good luck!
