    1960 Fuel Problem

My 1960 stopped running and upon investigating at the carb, no gas was getting to the carb when the engine was turning over. The fuel pump was rebuilt 550 miles ago and there is gas in the tank. I disconnected the steel fuel line from the rubber fuel line at the bottom of the carb and about 2 tablespoons of gas came out of the steel line.

I then moved back to the connection between the frame rail fuel line and the line coming over the side of the gas tank; nothing came out when I disconnected lines. Should gas pour out of the open fuel line by gravity flow? or do I have a plugged strainer assembly inside the tank? or does gas flow thru the lines only when the fuel pump is working properly?

sounds like ya need to remove tank and have it hot-tanked at the local engine rebuilders to remove probable varnish deposits.Might pull fuel guage sending unit from top of tank and make sure its just not the sending unit that is clogged with varnish in which case you may not have to pull tank itself. good luck and get it done before spring arrives. mike

      Joe,
I just had a similiar thing happen to me on my 61 FI car. The car ran out of gas and wouldn't start when gas was added to the tank. My past experience was these systems primed themselves after gasoline was added so I was beginning to blame the FI unit. I noticed I had no gas to the FI unit. As mine is an FI car I had no place to add gasoline to get it going like you do with a carbureted car so I was left with no option but to free the main feed at the fuel pump and get it flowing w/ the help of a vacuum pump and quickly reconnect the line. That did the trick. Be careful if you choose this method.

There is a filter on the end of the sending unit in the tank. Not many people replace that filter and it is the place to start IMO.
