Restoring the original for my 58. The wire element burned out. Is there a way to repair it? Can I re"wind" a new wire and solder it in place? What is the wire made of and what gauge? I can get the coil diameter from the original remnant and replicate the number of coils. I have a replacement from NAPA but the element is longer with much smaller and numerous coils. The NAPA reads 2.5 ohms. Also any tips on what to use to clean up the ceramic body. It had previously been Bubba'd with blackout paint. Got most of it off but it got in the pores. I'm soaking it in greased lightning which seems to take off paint and oil rather well. Thanks. Ken

I got lucky last year...
My original quit working years ago, and I got it out when I was trying to find a way to repair or replace it. I was lucky because when I cleaned it with Lime-Away, the corrosion went away from the screws and it was OK. Now at the time I thought it was burned out, somebody offered to reman it, if I could only remember who. Replacement GM resistors are similar, and the original ceramic part could be combined with the electrical parts of the replacement.- Top
