Re: C5s Being Recalled By GM...

The (long) story in the Detroit paper this morning says the recall affects automatics from 1997-2000 sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, 1997-2004 automatics sold in Europe and other export markets, and all manuals regardless of market from 1997-2004.

i have had 2 C-5s with the lock and never had

the problem.i think the problem is caused by drivers pulling on the steering wheel to pull themselves out of the seat after the lock was engaged. this binds the lock pin causing the problem. JMHO

There are two different fixes. If you have a 97-00 A4, then GM is going to remove the locking ring mounted on the steering column shaft. That way there is nothing for the shot pin to engage. On the A4's, the column will not lock when the key is removed. This change was implemented on all new A4's (USA) since 01. On the M6 cars, GM has to leave the locking mechanism in place to meet federal law, so they are reflashing the computer with new software that will make sure the fuel flow is cutoff if the steering column lock malfunctions. If you have a M6 and have the dreaded steering column lock malfunction, you will have to flatbed to the dealer and have them get the column unlocked. The question is, if the car is out of warrenty on a M6 model, who will pay for the tow and the dealer to unlock the column? GM will have satisfied the requirements of the recall by installing the new software, so it looks like you, the owner, will shell out the cash since the column lock mechanism is out of warrenty. To me, it's still not a satisfactory response from GM. Why can't they just design a column lock that works and install it in the M6's.
