I need to replace the alternator on my 68 L79 with no air conditioning. What is the correct amperage for this application? I'm seeing a wide range available including a "correct dated" one stated for my year, but says it is a 61 amp, which I thought was for a 69, not 68. Dazed and confused, once again.

Re: Correct Alternator for 68?
Your copy of the 68-69 Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide gives a clear table of '68 alternator applications:
(1) 1100693 37A Base unit, 300-400 HP
(2) 1100696 42A 350, 390, 400, 430, 435 HP with TI ignition
(3) 1100750 61A All w A/C- Top

Re: Correct Alternator for 68?
Dave-----
There's no chance of confusing a 1968 alternator with a 1969. 1968 was the last year for the use on Corvettes of the DN-series, external regulator alternator. 1969 was the first year for the use of the SI-series internal regulator alternator on a Corvette or ANY car, for that matter.
The split ring end case of the 2 alternator types are completely different and instantly recognizable. However, the DRIVE end case half is the same. So, it's possible that after these things go through a commercial rebuilder's operation alternator part numbers (stamped on the drive end case) could get "mixed up".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Correct Alternator for 68?
Thanks Jack. The 1100696 apparantly changed to 1846935, which is now 12321155 according to my local GM parts dealer. Of course, this one won't be the correct dated original, but better that the one wire chrome gizmo that came with car when I got it.- Top
