    Laquer question...

    Hi,

There was a post about laquer availability and who currently sells it. I cant find it in the archives and dont remember who posted it. Does anyone remember something like this.
    Thanks

      Re: Laquer question...

Chuck, I posted the following a couple of months ago concerning DuPont lacquer. Since that time there has been an unconfirmed rumor that DuPont has recalled all their existing lacquer supplies.

Several people emailed me asking for contact info on a source for DuPont lacquers. Here is the info I received from DuPont: Sauage (sp?) Auto Hamilton, Oh (513) 883-2468 Ask for Lex or Jack I have not spoken with these folks, but this info is from the proverbial "horses mouth".

I spoke with my Dupont rep a couple of days ago and asked if he knew the status of lacquer supplies. He replied that he had not heard about a recall, but wouldn't be surprised.

        Re: Sources for Laquer question

A friend of mine just bought nitrocellulose lacquer from Bill Hirsch at 1-800-828-2081. Or try Hibernia at 1-973-627-1882. I don't know if they have acrylic lacquer. Both of these vendors are located in the Hemmings Motor News in the front under Supplies,Tools, and Trailers. Good Luck and please let me know if this works out! Dick Gutman

I'm relatively new to the painting game, but I bought Duracryl, which I beleive is acrylic laquer at a local paint store that sells PPG products last fall .It's right down the road from the PPG plant here in Cleve.OH.but the more I learn about EPA standards,I'm begining to think I should go back there and buy a gallon and put it in a"cool dry place"for when I get around to painting my car. That is if I still can.

            Barney,

I live in Cleveland, where did you find the paint. Thanks for the help. Where in Cleveland do you live?

              Barney,
You probably do not need to worry about the EPA. They have come out publicly and said that they will not be going after lacquer. It is a very low use refinishing material and little is to be gained by a ban. The suppliers that sell it are getting few and far between as the volume of use drops off. The big internet sellers like Autocolorlibrary.com will probably have the lions share of the market soon as they are the only ones that can generate sufficient volume to justify the cost and space that a lacquer mixing setup entails.
When I asked PPG last year, they said that they had no intent of stopping production on lacquer automotive finishes, but even if they do, some other enterprising company will produce it as long as there is demand for it. As long as there are anal retentive restorers like myself that think nothing but lacquer will do on a correct restoration, there will be lacquer available!

Laquer? Will you be painting the '59 in lacquer?

Hi John, I know your position on lacquer for restorations but what about the '59 project? Will you be using lacquer or BC/CC? I was thinking that beautiful tube frame would look good in the asphalt based semi gloss black. Just kidding.

Chuck,The place is called D&S Color Supply. It's located at W.115 & Lorain. You might want to try a pint first.I'm glad I did. They claimed they had a formula for my Donnybrooke Green and it was green, just not Donnybrooke Green. They claim to have a computer that can copy any color if you can bring them something to copy it from, but I havn't got that far yet.Good Luck,Barney.

Re: Laquer? Will you be painting the '59 in lacque

                      Clare,
The 59 will be getting a nice single stage urethane paint job with maybe a couple of coats of clear over the Viper red! I would never put lacquer on a daily driven car, but I would never put anything but lacquer on a judged car.
I now have the full chassis and drivetrain put together and put the driveshaft and headers on tonight. Every day gets me just a little closer! I will send you some new pics when I get a chance.

                      Regards, John McGraw
