    And, PS

I don't care how many of you don't like my position. It galls me to no end to see all the manufacturing jobs going out of this country. You can have all the professional people you like. All the educated ones. What happens if everyone becomes educated and professional? Not everyone can go to college and not everyone will do the menial work with a college degree. There are different level jobs for everyone (or, there used to be) Now what do we do? I don't care how small the number of jobs are. Or, what they manufacture. The point of the matter is, if you're not making anything tangible, your money is worthless! I hope me or my kids don't live to see this day come!

      You've missed my point...

I am a veteran and have traveled and worked in the third world, so I have seen their industries up close and personal. I buy American whenever I can, but this means I buy less.

High import duties will simply kill the repro industry, not create jobs. In the 80's, the US gov't slapped a "luxury tax" on yachts and private planes. Instead of biting the bullet and paying more, the rich just cut back on buying them. The result was many of the workers in these industries lost their jobs.

If you double or triple the price of Corvette parts, be prepared to see the NCRS get a lot smaller, since only the wealthy will be able to afford this hobby- How many "Ferrari Club" rallies do you see?

The only permanent solution is to get our "trading partners" to stop raping our foreign customers.

        Exactly right!

That's why the 58-60 air cleaner is under $200. How many people would buy new ones if they were $1300, like the 55-7?? Darn few!

I like your aircraft analogy- We cracked a windshield in New Guinea, and I saw the invoice for the replacement- $6,000.

A friend was working on a Mercedes- Thought about replacing the four outside door handles. Mercedes is the only source. At $900 for four pieces of plated white metal, he decided the ones he had weren't so bad.

People have only so much money to spend- If the typical Corvette restoration was going to cost, say $40,000 just for the parts, people would find something else to do.

Re: Pretty impressive profile you have there.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but insulting me for expressing my opinion discounts pretty much anything you have to say. Even if I am wrong, and I don't think I am, I have the right to say it. In a time long, long ago, everything was made in America and people had no choice but to buy American, even if the product was garbage. People worked in factories because they had limited opportunities elsewhere. Before WWII, only the wealthy could generally afford college.

The world has changed. You can either rant about it, blame someone else or adjust to it. I would love nothing better than to have every product sold in this country to be made by Americans. Its not going to happen any time soon. As a result, people need to adjust and find careers where America can excel and compete. Those that don't will be left behind. We will never be able to compete with wages in China or India for production type work. That is why we are seeing basic programming type work moving to India. Its generally pretty routine work without a lot of added intellectual capital. Quotas, tariffs, protectionism, etc have been proven not to work!

The US has gone through periods such as this in the past. The great thing about the American economy is that it can adapt and adjust because it is free and open and values the right of the individual to benefit from their labor. Sure some people get hurt in the process and this is unfortunate. I care deeply what happens to these people. Hopefully our social safety nets are sufficient to help them get back on their feet.

                  Re: You've missed my point...

You've missed the point. If you have traveled as much as you say you have you would know that this is the only country who lets anybody ship anything in to it and takes away jobs right here. Where does it say we have to keep the world economy going. Let's take care of are own first. But that would cut into the world wide profits of our own big corperations who have millions of dollars invested in third world manufactoring. Who the hell do you think gave these countries the money and technology to manufactor? Do some research and see where US companies are investing money. Surprise Surprise!!

                    If I may suggest...

If you were to actually listen to Rush, for, say, one month, you would know his show is thought provoking, and he invites and encourages callers of differing views. He knows a bunch of calls just agreeing with him would be boring. That is why he hosts the largest radio show in the history of radio.

                    Kinda like this BBS.

How did we get HERE on a tech BBS?

                        Mike,

Agree with all your comments and would also like to add that for folks to say there are no jobs available for them or they have been unemployed for some many months - it's because they have chosen to be unemployed for that length of time! jobs are available! it is just that many Americans are too damned lazy to go out and actually WORK! that is why many of the jobs are filled by the Koreans, the Mexicans, etc., as they are all chasing the "American dream" which this GREAT COUNTRY was founded on - HARD WORK!

Most Americans (including myself) have forgotten what got us to where we are in our lives - we have eletronic gadgets to do just about everything for us now - from the damned cell phones, to the digital cameras, to the 65 inch tvs, etc. etc. RANT OFF

Re: Pretty impressive profile you have there.

                          Rick:

I think you are right. A friend of mine with a business told me the other day he has having trouble finding good people. The job pays about $50K a year but requires you to hustle as its a sales job. Most people will not work hard enough at it.

Maybe I got my work ethics from my Irish/German immigrant grandparents. They came to America dirt poor with no more than a sixth grade education. They all worked two jobs each, some of which was in the most menial occupations such as a janitor. They provided a decent life for my parents. Getting an education for their kids was the #1 priority so their children and grandchildren would not have to take assembly line and laborer type jobs. As a result, my parents went to college. Not that there was anything wrong with jobs that do not require a college education, they just wanted better for their kids and grand kids.

The really unusual part of my family's story is that it isn't unusual at all. Millions of Americans have the same story. Two generations ago it was Irish, Germans, Italians, etc. Today its people from Asia, South and Latin America.

Its funny how you rarely see a homeless person that has an Asian or Hispanic background.

I'd vote for Hillary if she were the alternative to the bought and paid for job killing corporate lackeys in there today, but I think there might be other alternatives. I agree that manufacturing jobs are critical to the countries future. I worked for the general back in the seventies and my dad and most of my uncles retired from GM. Those were good paying and community-building jobs that are pretty much gone now. Where I live (N.California)we are seeing the manufacturing jobs go away and the labor market submerged by cheap unskilled labor. It seems to me to be a complex issue, but sending our jobs away and importing cheap labor to the few that remain seems only to enrich one class of people. Anyway, we, on this forum, have something in common which I hope ties us together and the partisan name calling and bickering takes away from that. As John McGraw says:
