    1960 FRONT SUSPENSION BUSHINGS

Can anyone tell me how to tell when front suspension bushings/shafts need to be replaced ? I have removed and cleaned all the parts with the intention of putting a complete front end kit on the car but upon closer inspection I am not sure that I should do that. The kingpins have recently been replaced and the remainder of the bushings feel pretty good even though they appear to be the original parts the general put on the car 40 yrs ago. I have looked in the service manual for some guidance on how much play is acceptable and they make comments such as "if part is unservicable then,...." but at no time indicate what would make a part unservicable. All comments would be appreciated.

Well, you've sent me to the library, the 1953 "Chilton's Motor age Flat Rate and Service manual provides the most lucid description, in general, with the front wheel bearings tightened to spec, and the wheel off the ground supported under the A-arm so that the spring load is not on the suspension parts, check all components for "looseness". Any component showing looseness should be replaced prior to attempting front end alignment. Hope it helps, another method is to borrow an old time mechanic and have him give it the "once over" then follow his recommendations.
