    plate restoration

I just got two old (1954) plates back from Larry Hoeft and they were great. He was quick, reasonable about price, and did a super job, even effecting minor repairs. He can be reached at tlhoeft@juno.com.

I second your praise for Larry. He did a super job on 2 plates for my 62. Quick turnaround and the cheapest price I could find. The guys that do this as a hobby do
it as a labor of love.

      Re: plate restoration

      Hello,

Does he have plates in stock or do you have to send him a plate to be restored? I was getting around to registering my 69 soon (NY state) and was considering the vintage plates. How easy are 69 NY state license plates to obtain?

I'm not sure if Larry has plates or not. I found mine by an ad in our local swap/sell mag. Hemmings also has vendors listed. Also, show up at some of the bigger car shows in NY where various vendors sell their wares.Plates should be fairly easy to find and are a nice touch on older Corvettes.

            Re: plate restoration

i am looking at some vintage plates online for NY state and I realized I am not sure what colors would be appropriate for a 1969 NY state vehicle. Can anyone help me out? from looking at some ebay postings, it looks like it should be yellow lettering with blue background. TIA

Correct colors. Also, you need the 69 sticker. There is a guy in upstate NY who has them...Look in Hemmings. If you can't find him, I may have info here, but I'll have to dig for it. I did this for my 66 and even though I followed all of NYS rules, I had a problem because I neglected to tell my insurance Co. (American Collectors) that the plate # had changed, so when DMV hit their computer the next time, they found no match and I got the dreaded "YOU HAVE NO INSURANCE" letter.

Also, you can find plates and stickers at any big swap meet. The plate you decide to use must be unused currently, so make sure the guy you buy it from has checked, or will take it back if you can't use it. Also, if you register the car with a vintage plate in NY you must turn in that plate (the one you paid $$ for) to DMV if you drop insurance or sell the car and don't have another 69 to put it on.

Because of all this baloney, when I got my 68 I registered it the regular way.

I didn't know you have to turn it in, are you sure that you can't have DMV hold it / store it for you. I just got 62 plates for my 62. I plan on keeping the car till I die so I guess it won't be a problem for me.

                    Larry

The NYS DMV says that "some offices may store the plates for you". I never asked which ones would, but I guess if they are "storing" them, you can't sell them or hang them on your wall. I guess if there was a short delay between one 62 and another, that would work. In any case, you have the right idea: never sell
