    60' Cyl. head Id's ? Help.

I found a set of heads #3774682 that I have had for 25 years? I was looking for a set of 692s....can anyone help with the information on mine and the difference of the two? My Chevy engine numbers book only goes back to 62'
    thanks

    Re: 60' Cyl. head Id's ? Help.

The 3774682 heads were used on 1960-61 passenger cars, 283/170 horsepower. The difference in the 692's is that the aplication was used on 1960-61 passenger cars and corvettes with 230-290 horsepower. Valve size same on the 2 heads, combustion chambers different, 682 head - 69.369 cc, 692 head - 59.669 cc

      Flint vs. Tonawanda Heads

I'm told that the correct Flint (MI) heads had a smooth surface on the "ID marker". (The triangle on top of a rectangle that was cast into the end of the heads). This comes from the NCRS judging manuals available on www.ncrs.org.

I have a copy of a page which explains this, and the fact that Tonawanda (NY) heads with the same casting number, were not finished off like the Flint heads, but left with the "mold finish".

I will attempt to post a photo of such Flint heads on www.midvette.homestead.com

Credit for pointing this out to me goes to Woody at Woody's Lost Resort (AZ).

Tom: you are correct. Flint cast heads will have their, as you call it, ID marker area broached smooth whereas ton owanda heads will have rough sand cast appearance in the ID Marker areas as they weren't sent thru the broaching machine. mike
