    1964 327/300 Hesitation Problem--Mystery Solved!!

It is a grand and glorious day indeed! After months of torment and anguish and a feeling of impotence at every red light, I finally discovered why my 1964 with a Carter AFB hesitated badly off-idle. I am too happy to be embarassed. Turns out all I had to do was "flip" the s-link that connects the accelerator pump rod to the pump lever. While looking at the front of the AFB, the hook should look like an "S" whereas mine was reversed in a "Z" position. It may not seem like it, but the position of the s-link DOES make a difference.

The $19 bucks I paid for Dave Emanuel's book on Carter Carburetors was the best investment I made in a long time--the AFB rebuild section made special note of the proper position of the s-link. I my case, the s-link was already reversed when I bought the car. I assumed it was in the proper position and may never have figured out the problem if not for the book.

Hopefully, this post will someone else avoid a similar experience. Sometimes the minor details make all the difference.

Congratulations. I love an easy fix, but I sure don't get many. Where are you located in Houston?

Way to go, I'm running down to look at mine right now.

You may have solved two problems. Mine is also flipped to look like a "Z". Tomorrow I'll flip it and test it out.

          Randy,

I hope this solves your problem. The difference was like night and day for me.

          Good luck!

            Bryan,

Cheap and easy are always winners in my book. Just wish I could have figured it out before the more expensive and harder fixes I tried earlier.

I live in the Garden Oaks area of Houston, just north of the Heights.

I do too Bruce. I have to wait until tomorrow. Good old rain here.

Randy, I'm really glad to be able to finally help someone else for a change after being such a heavy taker on this site. I sort of thought I wasn't the Lone Ranger with this issue. If your experience was anything like mine, you probably feel like you're driving a "new" car.
