It is a grand and glorious day indeed! After months of torment and anguish and a feeling of impotence at every red light, I finally discovered why my 1964 with a Carter AFB hesitated badly off-idle. I am too happy to be embarassed. Turns out all I had to do was "flip" the s-link that connects the accelerator pump rod to the pump lever. While looking at the front of the AFB, the hook should look like an "S" whereas mine was reversed in a "Z" position. It may not seem like it, but the position of the s-link DOES make a difference.
The $19 bucks I paid for Dave Emanuel's book on Carter Carburetors was the best investment I made in a long time--the AFB rebuild section made special note of the proper position of the s-link. I my case, the s-link was already reversed when I bought the car. I assumed it was in the proper position and may never have figured out the problem if not for the book.
Hopefully, this post will someone else avoid a similar experience. Sometimes the minor details make all the difference.
