I have been trying to get an accurate PPG formula code(#81540) for 1967 Sunfire yellow #984 in the PPG "Concept" urathane single coat. The "offset" colors that I have tried are not consistant with the original color examples on the car. I noticed 1968 Safari yellow (GM #984 as well) does have a Concept mix formula(#81621) available. The body shop says a test panel of the 68 color looks right on. Does anyone know if the 1967 Sunfire and the 1968 Safari yellows(#984)are in fact the same color with different PPG numbers? Or is there a fundamental difference I may regret going forward? Thank you in adavnce for your comments and direction on this matter. Glenn

Re: C-2 1967 #984 Sunfire yellow paint dilemma
Glenn, At the 2003 National Meet I attended an excellent paint tech session. A document was passed out that showed all the Dupont urethane cross reference numbers for all years and colors of Corvettes. If I could only find it I'd give you the number...I think it's in my garage and the temp is 0 degrees right now so I'm in for the night! At any rate I know Dupont has a match as I am also doing a yellow 67. Contact me if you want me to do a search tomorrow.- Top

Re: C-2 1967 #984 Sunfire yellow paint dilemma
Mark: I just went and looked at the sample of 1968 Safari Yellow the body shop had prepared. It is unanimous, the color is NOT THE SAME as 1967. Consequently, I would appreciate any direction you may have that will get a PPG "Concept" formula for the 1967 Sunfire yellow. I am leary of laquer, as I will not have the time to maintain it. Re: C-2 1967 #984 Sunfire yellow paint dilemma
Glen, From the document Mark spoke of here it is: 1967 paint code 984 Sunfire Yellow, the Dupont stock code is 4711. Hope this helps, DickDick Capello

Re: C-2 1967 #984 Sunfire yellow paint dilemma
Glenn, you might consider contacting AutoColorLibrary.com (link below) for info on how they make their color matches. They are supposed to have an old experienced PPG paint guy on staff to help meet your requirements. I believe he can be contacted by email.
Their claim (and we all suspect what that's worth): "We have PPG-Ditzlers Complete Historical Formula Database and Color Samples in hand to assist us in developing Certified Color Matches in any type of PPG paint that you require."
Based on my recent experience, I would say their prices are about the same as that quoted by the local PPG distributor. In my case, I would have the ususal internet purchase trade-off, i.e. I have to pay shipping, but I don't have to pay the state/local sales tax, making such purchases typically a wash pricewise.
If there seems to be some doubt about my local PPG dealer's ability to provide the color I want, I would consider purchasing the DCC color at AutoColorLibrary, and buying everything else (primer, primer-surfacer, catalysts, DCU, etc.) locally.

Re: C-2 1967 #984 Sunfire - PPG vs Dupont
Wayne...the only reason I am requesting the PPG formula is the shop I am working with is strictly a PPG paint shop. I have never even asked them to consider another, but I really cannot imagine why not. As long as the Dupont color is a ringer, the painter is excellant ,definately worth a try.
On the other matter, the laquer paint, based on conversation here and various other publications seems to be a lot more work in maintaining the lustre through waxing, wet-sanding etc. I am looking at the single coat urethane to hold the shine, maintain durability, and keep the original look, without going to a base/clear finish . Petty I realize, but that's the logic. Glenn- Top
