New Shock Mount Cracks Spindle Ear (C2)

Anyone ever have this happen? I cracked the front ring or "ear" on a rear spindle.

I'm planning to get the ear welded (add some material) and also grind down some of the height off the knurls on the reproduction shock mount. Those knurls are too high for my C2 (second design) spindles.

Yep, I have new trailing arms, new bearings and etc. Had them mounted and bolted to the u-joints when I heard the "pop".

    Tom-----

I've never heard of it happening on installation, but I suppose it's possible. I hope that you didn't attempt to pound on the ends of the shock mount shafts to "seat" the "knurled" area. These are best seated by SLOWLY drawing the shaft into the spindle support with the nut.

I'd forget about welding the spindle support to repair it. The spindle supports are manufactured of nodular cast iron. I'd never trust a welded one, added material, or not. This is a critical suspension AND drive component. It has to be 100%. Used originals are not that hard to come by. Although the casting numbers are the same for both sides, the finished parts are different. Make sure that you get the correct one as determined by the "D" shaped hole being at the rear, as installed in the car.

      Thanks again, Joe.

I did some light tapping with a small claw hammer, but I feel there is no way the current knurled area would have fit. It popped when I was on the other side of the car. I didn't have it more than 60% in when it happened.

I have found one used one so far, but I don't want it to happen again. /td

You might want to try a set of shock mounts from Bair's, I've used them a number of times and they fit very well.
