    1959 2x4 Carbs

I recently started the engine on my 59 and noticed that the accelerator pump on the back or primary carb wasn't feeding fuel. Obviously on start off I have to rev-up to get the car to move. The engine is newly rebuilt, as are the carbs, but both have been sitting for a time and I was wondering if this is something I can work out or will this carb need to be broken down again. I have kept these carbs covered and have handled with extreme care but I can't help but think that some debris might have fallen or been fed into it. I am open to advice or comments.

Accelerator pumps are notorious for going bad when sitting around dry. I doubt that debris is the problem if everything is new. I assume you are running a filter. You should be able to just replace the pump without upsetting anything else. If the seal on the pump looks good, you may have a blocked passage.

also check to make sure the "check valve" under the squirter that prevents the circut from back draining is not stuck. you can check this by removing the external pump linkage and moving the pump arm by hand and if it is hard to move that is the problem. if the pump arm moves easily and you get no fuel squirting from the nozzles the pump leather is dried out and can be freshened up by soaking it in motor oil

        Gary,
Wayne and Clem both give good advice. I'm guessing it's the leather seal on the pump plunger which has dried out. Work front and rear pump plungers by hand and see if either are sending a stream of gas into the primary venturi's. If the rear carb isn't, that's your problem. 2 X 4's system require a little "tinkering" every so often, on the same vein as "tinkering with" the mechanical lifters. I would recommend you learn to do this carb "tinkering" yourself, it's not that hard. Recommend you get a Chevy Service manual of the late '50's' early '60's which will have a section on the WCFB carb, how to take it apart, and rebuild it.It's a pretty simple carb! Following the instructions regarding taking the air horn off (not that hard), and either replacing or refurbish the pump plunger (soak in gasoline) and you'll very likely be back in business. And, next time "tinkering" on these WCFB's will be a job you'll be willing to consider. Regards.
