    C1 59: Heater core replacement

    Colleague restorers,

Since I'm currently working on fixing the almost completely removed
heating environment I need to know what the proper procedure is to replace
the heater core and heating valve.

    thanks,
    Rob.

    Shouldn't there be a 90 degree L-bow there?

Rob, The job is not hard, but you have to remove alot of parts. Disconnect battery if you choose for safety since you are going to be taking the fan blower off. Drain water to a level where you can disconnect the heater hoses. It might be a good idea to drain all and flush system, after replacement since there may be trash in heater core and system. If your car has the distributor shielding the passenger side wire cover will have to come off. Also the hood female & cable attachments on passenger side has to be removed. The cable for the air duct flap has to be removed. The air duct (under hood) to the heater core housing has to come off. There are four nuts holding the heater housing to the firewall remove them. Inside the car you are going to have to remove package tray and fiberglass panel under tray for better access. You are missing a 90 degree fitting where that hose is bent going thru the firewall. You will also for sure need a new gasket kit that goes between sections of the blower and the rectangle heater core housing. On the foward part of the cardboard plenum, there is a cable for the flapper for defrost or floor heat which is snapped in place, disconnect it.The cable for the heater control valve you will see easy enough to undo. Be carefull pulling unit out from under passenger side dash, mine was really stuck. There isn't alot of fiberglass where the holes are on firewall, holes close to heater core hole in firewall. Then disassemble the heater unit on work bench. The 4 studs (which goes thru firewall) are held in place be a flat lock washer. I removed mine with small screw driver, I just pryed them off and was able to reuse. You could recore or just replace the heater core. If you have any questions feel free to email me, I just did this job on my 59, best Scott
