Do you recall that little hole in the floor of you Corvette. It's covered with a plug and looks like a drain. If you remove it you can see your Vin number WOW! If you use the diagram made by J.G Mattson for me in the SACE Straight Talk Mag 1990 you can see it if you clean the area.
58 to 62 Vin # number ?

Re: 58 to 62 Vin # number ?
Roy, pretty interesting. Like so many others before me, I found that lifting the body off the frame is so much simpler and quicker. After all, who would want to spend that much effort just looking through a strategically placed hole?- Top

My '62 was stamped twice
Currently doing a frame off, my frame is one of those that are stamped twice. Both sets of numbers are stamped fairly deep in the metal but I'd guess the frames were stamped close to assembly after black out was applied. Wonder if they ever got any mixed up??
I've had the opportunity to recently see a couple of frames at a local shop, both are stamped twice, a '57 and a '61.
Question: If you were replacing a frame would you try to restamp it?
Just kidding of course, but if someone lost their VIN tag and had to somehow show a state motor vehicle official the frame ID to prove the VIN, well you can see where I'm going with this....- Top

Re: My '62 was stamped twice
Some years ago I came by a Over the counter bare ( parts Department) frame that could be used for a 53 to 57 Corvette having no numbers stamped in it. I used it for a 55 Corvette I later sold. Yes , sure I stamped the the ID numbers in it where they should be using the original pink and ID plate. Hell! why not???? When I worked for a Chevy dealer as a mechanic in the 60's the body shop did that as stander procedure and I did when replacing a short block . Frames and engines gotten from the parts department didn't have any numbers stamped in them. ( that's true today) .It was just a matter of fact to stamp them. To day the CHP would do the same if you took a project Corvette to them with the same situation. Why not? the frame needs identification by LAW. All this fuss over stamping to me is! well %^$$#@.The bigger question is that in Ca. you can get a pink using only the frame as the ID to get a new ID tag. Or a ID tag to get a pink with out the frame ID stamp.
So then one person with a 53 frame number only can get a pink using the frame # 03.
And then a second person with a 53 tag number only can get a pink using the tag # 03 too.
So where are we now? We can have one owner owning #03 Corvette registered in Ca, and some one else in N.Y also owning Corvette #03 WOW! HOW SWEET IS THAT?????? The states are going to start talking to each other and using PC's down the road for registering cars. WOW! HOW SWEET THAT WILL BE. ( for people owning the same nummber Corvette).- Top
