I followed last week's thread about short leg vs. long leg water pumps with some interest but it provided no resolution to my problem. I have three 3704911 1956 Chevy water pumps. One from the engine I removed from my 1956 Corvette, a professionally rebuilt unit fresh out of the box that is installed on the engine going into said Corvette (both 265s), and a disassembled core from a swap meet transaction. Using the same (correct) pulleys I removed, I had trouble with the alignment when I installed the rebuilt water pump on the replacement motor (which is assembled with the crank spacer). That misalignment has been corrected but I'm wondering what the proper mounting surface to hub distance is for when I rebuild the core. The 1955/6 service manual says to use tool J5775 and maintain a .005" tolerance, but they don't say how long J5775 is. The two assembled pumps I have were barely within .25" of one another. Does anyone know what the correct measurement is? Thanks to anyone who can help.
