    Engine Painting Details: 327

A few outstanding questions regarding Engine Painting Details for a 63/327. 1.I have installed correct AC Spark Plugs prior to painting. Is the ENTIRE plug painted...or somehow covered before painting? 2.Water Pump Shaft and fan bolting Hub? Most pics show this as unpainted. 3.Fuel Pump steel plate. On block at the time of painting..or off? 4.Engine Oil Plug. Everything I see in books mentions "a white gasket"..if this is in fact painted....how can anyone determine if its "white" if everything is to be Orange? Too much darn time into this thing now. Have to sweat the small stuff! Thanks, AC

In GENERAL, the AIM is a good source to answer these questions. If it shows the part going onto the engine in St. Louis, you can pretty well bet it wasn't painted with the engine assy at Flint. This goes for the fuel pump.

Water pump was on the engine when painted, but the mounting hub was masked to make the fan/clutch mount clean and solid. So, only the body of the water pump will bear Chevy orange.

Bottom of pan is notorious for 'spotty' (light) coverage along with bell housing. Drain plug gasket will be protected by plug washer head.

Sweating the small stuff is the 'fun' -- like a crossword puzzle you explore history and see who did what/where in the GM assy process. Your NCRS Judging Guide answers many of these questions....

The plugs originally appeared as if the tops were wiped clean or booted. Water pump shafts was an area they (GM worker) tried to keep clear of paint (not always sucessful). The fuel pump plate was not assembled at time of orange painting. Oil plug delrin (type plastic) washer did not accept paint well, hence reason the white is mentioned. Other areas they mention black finish bolts that were painted over, but not always covered well.

Thank you, thank you. I just dropped of the engine today. I will be meeting with the body shop owner later tomorrow to discuss. I now have most of the final details thanks to your replies. One additional question: My car is Powerglide equiped. Should there be overspray on the upper "bell" where the tranny bolts to the engine. Regardless of the fact I spent a ton of time getting the aluminum case back into shape...I would like to stay true to the factory flaws if needbe. Thanks, Arne
