    C3-4 stub axles

My stub axles have very close to 1/16 in/out play. Is that over spec? It sure translates to a ton of movement at the wheel. Wheel bearings are ok.

    Frank-----

I've never found a GM-published spec on the yoke axle end play. However, I consider that 1/16" is the absolute maximum that should exist. The stub axle ends are case hardened. This means that only the very outermost portion of the steel is hardened. Once the case hardening wears through, further wear occurs rapidly. With 1/16" end play, the case hardening is likely worn through.

      Frank,

I'm a little slow but you are confusing me with the C3-4. What year are you talking about? Are you talking about the axles that come out of the differential or the axles that the wheel is bolted on. Maybe Joe L. has already answered your question but it might need a little more explanation.

I agree, what is so hard about stating the year of the car. C3 tells me little actually. There is a ton of difference between a 68 and an 82.

          Oop's I ment C2-3

Wayne, my '65 has [not sure] I belive a '74 BB center section. J.Ray, I'm used to calling the axles at the diff stub axles and at the wheels I notice they are commonly called the the spindle.

            Frank,

The reason I ask for a clarification is: If you had a 78 or 79 the stub axles (ones from the differential) were not as hard as they should have been. They are prone to sheering off past the c-clip and allowing the rear end a lot of free play. If you had 1/16" play in the spindle it is past time to pay some attention to that puppy.

            Regards,
