    C2 4 Speed to Powerglide conversion

    Has anyone converted a C2 4 speed to a Powerglide? What are the issue to look out for?

    What I would worry about...

    in your shoes, is being mobbed by powerglide owners who want to swap parts with me.

    But, if you're determined to go through with this, there are no physical problems with the changeover. Mid-year frames, driveshafts, and floorpans are all the same within a model year. My father used to say: "Turn 'em upside down and they all look the same".

        jerry is right on. You'll need to come up witn an alum vet or pass car powerglide( 62 or 63 thru 68{i believe}) with corvette tail housing( enabling you to mount a c-2 PG shifter{which are being repo'd {[ try vette prod of miuchigan for shifter] ). Flywheel, torque conv., alum pg(excepting the tail housing) are all Pass car varities{since you're converting a 4 speed to PG, i assume fight judging isn't your bag{and that's ok with me ---as long as the vet doesn't show up for judging in the future)}. I woulnd't fool with the rear end (Change of ratio)as the 4 speed rear ratio is probably(but not necessarily) deeper than an original PG equipped rear would have been. Why are you changing from ss to auto? hollar if you need more specifics on the conversion. mike

              You didn't mention the year of your c-2. 63 would be the most difficult to switch over. The 63 powerglide is hard to find. The tail piece was only used for the 63 Vette and since the shifter fastenes to the tail piece you will need the correct part. Be carefull in your selection of a powerglide not all are the same. The 250 and 300 hp corvete did not use the same transmission as the chevy 2 or the Impala. The chevy 2 trans. is not heavy duty enough and the early ones are air cooled. The Impala trans. is shorter then the corvette trans. Your best result would be to find an actual corvette powerglide.
              I believe Corvette auto transmissions had 5 clutch plates, the Impala had 4 and the chevy 2 had 3.

                My '64 is a PG. A friend is converting his '64 4-sp to a PG for his wife. He has a passenger car PG which looks the same as mine except the shifting arm is different. I don't know which unit he has or if is combined parts. I would think that the PG from a Impala SS with buckets seats and console mounted shif lever would work, but not sure.He measured and photo'd my shifting arm so he could fabricate one for his transmission. The PG's used a different AFB (330hp)then the std. trans. I don't know what the difference it between them. The neutral safety switch for the 63 & 64 is hard to find, different then the 65-67. I believe all the kickdown linkage and the modulator line, along with cooler and brkts and lines are available from ZIP, CC, etc.

                  Keep it simple ,use a back up switch as a safty switch,easy to fine or use yours,use a trans cooler in front of the radiator so that you don't need a automatic radiator,mount the shifter on a made up plate and clamp it to the tail housing,and if need be move the trans. shifting arm connected to the out put shaft on the trans up or down to meet the rod to get the right direction while shifting.

                    Using a backup switch as a neutral safety switch doesn't provide for starting in either park or neutral. On the 63-64, the neutral safety switch is mounted at the front of the transmission next to the engine block, using a rod from the transmission shifter arm to rotate it. If a 63-64 has the backup lamp option, then the neutral safety switch also includes contacts for that circuit but the switch is still mounted in the same position. These switches are really hard to find. I believe with the 65-67's, the neutral safety switch was part of the shifter.
                    Also, all 63-67's had the seperate transmission cooler mounted in front of the radiator. The same radiator was used for both the Std transmission or the PG.
                    It would be nice to know what year the C2 is.
