    69 - A post weatherstrip mldg build-up

has anyone had a lot of experience with the A post area ? on the C3s the questions are - #1 did they use a stuubby self tapper for the stainless attatch?
#2 the moulding the weatherstrip fits into has an elongated base and middle hole for adjustment , is the top or third hole supposed to be elongated also ? because the windoww when wound up is missing the clip and going inboard, the door is adjusted well and at the limit,
#3 the caulking or weatherstrip goo used sandwitched in between all of this buildup is?

I have the mouldings all installed with weatherstrip and mouldings and the weatherstrip moulding is angled in more at the top than at the bottom . is this normal ?

Kelly, as I remember, there are a couple of different type screws in the weatherstrip retainer and moldings; "stubby self tapper" sounds familiar, but then I believe all those screws will have to be short. When I reassemble mine, I will have to depend on the bag labels and the AIM.

If your weatherstrip retainer is missing the top clip, it can be replaced fairly easily. I believe that NOS clips can still be found at some vendors...try Dr. Rebuild. Most of them are severely deterioated anyway...the plastic coating doesn't age well.

The reveal molding/weatherstrip retainer stackup is pretty clearly shown in the AIM; in my 70 AIM, it's UPC 1, Sheet F10 for coupes. A couple of sealants were used originally, but you are pretty much limited to finding something that will get the job done today. A close substitute for the (gray) sealing compound used between the birdcage pillar, the reveal molding, and the weatherstrip retainer is 3M's "Strip Kalk". There is another sealant used inside the weatherstrip retainer under the weatherstrip...I seem to remember this as being a non-hardening goo, like gasket cement, that was apparently originally applied as a viscous liquid. Weatherstrip cement was also used to install the weatherstrip in the retainer.

I doubt the angle of the weatherstrip retainer should change from bottom to top of the pillar. In fact, if I remember correctly, there is little between the reveal molding and the retainer to change the angle...only the sealant. If it were me, I would probably have to go back in to identify why the angle changes.
