Re: For a REAL dose of "reality", I would refer yo

Oh, I forgot that I had to drill holes in the floor pan to drain the water so as the carpet would not rot. It was dryer to drive in the rain with the top down than it was with it up. Typical '60's quality

Heck, The previous owner of my 58, shot holes in the floor of it with his pistol. Lots faster than drilling.

Re: I have seen many over-restored...

So how about this. A 63 cpe with perfect arrow staight panels, seams, flawless paint (white) not a ripple anywhere. No over spray on any of the ususal engine parts. Over-restored? Well that is exactly the way it came off the transport in 1963. Why? It was one of a few cars that Chevrolet took around to the zones to show the dealers the new 63. We got it with less than 15 miles on it. I know they didn't build them that nice ever, but it was delivered to our dealership by Chevrolet. How would you judge it? GL

Loren, I found the dip you refer to on my 62. Never had noticed it before. There is a similar dip on the left side, but not quite as pronounced. There is a distinct difference in the contour of the quarter panel and the door.

It would be judged as not a typical factory assembled vehicle.

Was it a really EARLY car? Perhaps

even a pilot line car? I can imagine that the pilot line body assemblers & painters might have been allotted the time to glass in the doors, etc. and really make it good. Other than that, it was probably a car built on the line and then sent somewhere like Creative _(?_____ for finishing.

Re: Was it a really EARLY car? Perhaps

Perhaps it was a pilot line car or was sent for detail before being shown to the dealers. If I dig out my inventory books, I will get the serial number. I have been around Corvettes all of my life, lots of trips to the factory etc. This was just a flawless car Chevrolet sent us after using it for zone showings. I am sure they would want a "show car" for that purpose. That said it was a car built by the factory, shipped to a dealer and sold to a retail customer. If it was vacume sealed until NCRS came along and taken to a show to be judged, I am sure there would be those that would question its condition. Probably points deductions for all kinds of stuff. The owner would have a hard time explaining that was how the dealership got it from Chevrolet and the way he got it from the dealership. GL

Let's just say that the deductions for Over

Restoration are NOT as tough or as many as NCRS would have you believe.

                        Re: Loren, you're absolutely correct!!!

I'm storing a virgin 62 for someone in my garage and it has a very distinct wave on the right side, as you mentioned. I'd never noticed this before. The paint was stripped over 25yrs ago and it hasn't been touched since.
Also, I did a frame off on my 56 back in 74-5. We put it back together just as it had come apart (that's the ONLY way everything would work) and virtually all the doors/panels have a crappy fit! But I feel much better now, as I have learned over the years that this poor fit is "normal".

Over restored or hand built by craftsmen?

Corvettes were a production car built by hourly employees with a schedule to meet. Quality varied from person to person and day to day. That was the reality then. The reality today is that most of us spending the time and money to restore a Corvette want better than the factory did it in the 50's and 60's.
