    numbers references

Any opinions in inregard to corvette by the numbers by Alan L.Colvin and NCRS Spec. guides? Accuracy and assistance in selecting correct numbers in relation to production date of vehicle. Obviously Colvin's is more extensive
but does it give information beyond just the correct number.

    Re: numbers references

    Tom-----

Both the NCRS Spec Guides and Alan Colvin's books are MUST HAVE items for a serious restorer. Colvin's books are probably the most extensive and accurate information of its kind ever made available to the general public. These books will give the average restorer more information than he/she wants, so it's WAY beyond just the "correct number".

      Colvin (sometimes) out to lunch

Classic example is the Muncie 4-speed (tail) extension housing (he claims) casting # 3846429 [driver side speedo cable attach], used until 2/65 [for all GM models], then 3857584 [passenger side speedo] through 1969 MY. This has become urban legend.

This is certainly not the case on early '65 Corvettes (used the "584") and, IMO, the "429" continued in use until '69 on other GM models, wherever a driver side speedo connect was required by design. The chassis P & A manual backs me on the Corvette break-point.

I also h'ae me doots about his call on coarse/fine thread studs on shifter forks; anybody out there have a '65 with coarse threads, or have they all been upgraded ?

      But overall, must-have reference books.

He wasn't real accurate on C1 axle housings either, drain plugs in particular, but on the whole a valuable reference. Me thinks he needs to do some revisions.
