    C-2 distributor or not?

I'm rebuilding the distributor- The shaft teeth and tach gear are beat. The tag id # 11120251 is obviously not for the L-76 engine. Anyone know what it's from?
Also as I was buying the replacement shaft- I noticed the replacement didn't have a "spiral" right above the tach gear. It looks to me as it's to bring oil up? The guys said they had never seen one like that before. What gives?

Well, first of all you've got one too many digits in the part number. One needs to be EXTREMELY careful when entering part numbers in questions---one digit off and it can cause a lot of problems in ID (might make someone just skip answering a question that they might, otherwise, be able to answer). In any event, assuming that you've entered an extra "2" before the "51" and the number is actually 1112051, then it's a 71-72 LS-5 distributor.

Yep- I guess I fat fingered that one. #112051 is correct.

      Thanks Joe

Before you rebuild the tach drive gears check the back of your distributor housing where the small horizontal gear seats. On my 65 the back of the distributor casting in this area was worn and damaged a new set of gears. I repaired using an epoxy weld and it worked fine so far.

          Hey Ray,

Thanks for the heads up! I just looked at the distributor on my other '65 (a L-79) and it's original. And I noticed the difference- on the newer 71-72, in the housing is a nylon button (only $2) that I replaced to keep the gears in alignment. Where as the 65 distributor doesn't have the provision for it.

          THANKS-

          Richard

The cross gear nylon button was added to Corvette distributors about 1970 or 71 for all PRODUCTION units. It was also added to SERVICE distributors for 62-69 applications after about 1971, even though those distributors were still available under their original part numbers. It was a highly useful revision. The nylon button GREATLY extends cross gear life. I recommend the installation of this button or the brass button manufactured by Hi-Tech Innovations for ALL 62-74 Corvette distributors including those not originally equipped with them.

              Re: C-2 distributor or not?

Joe, I recently picked up an NOS '069 distributor for my L76 (I was reading your recent post on mid-year distributor caps with interest, fyi the '64-dated 069 distributor I picked up, still in the box, has a black cap with copper) and I am getting my intake fixed (small crack by the temp sending unit) and my plan is to try out the brandy new distr. when I put that intake back on - and I take your advice to heart, I would like to improve the distributor as best I can, so any info on where to obtain the brass button manufactured by Hi-Tech Innovations? (my little googling around didn't seem to turn up a source). Is this an easy retrofit? Thanks for any help.

                Jack-----

I think that most of the Corvette vendors like Dr. Rebuild, etc. carry this piece. However, if you can't locate one, you can call Hi Tech innovations at 727-942-4003. By the way, if you have a SERVICE distributor manufactured after about 1970 or 71, yours may already have the nylon button installed. Check the external surface of the housing where the cross gear would "seat". If there is a 3/16" hole there, then this distributor will already have the nylon button installed. You can change this to the brass very easily if you choose. If there's no hole, then you will need to drill one to install either the nylon or brass button. If the external hole bothers you, you can either try drilling the hole so that it doesn't go all the way through the housing (but deep enough to seat the retaining "pin" on the brass button) or simply fill the EXTERNAL hole with JB Weld, sand smooth, and paint.

FWIW: nylon thrust button, 0B23 (no); 0J3( yes)

On ('70) distrib 1112021 and ('71) 1112038, respectively. This may narrow the changeover down somewhat (ie. between Feb 23rd and Sept 3rd), especially if other sources concur.
