More Radiator Questions..

I am considering purchasing one of the aluminum RADs for my 69 BB (27.5" brass config) like a Griffin or Dewitt's "Direct Fit" replacement. The stock RAD doesn't do the job!!! What are the implications in an NCRS judging event? -Obviously a points deduction is in order, but would it be a full deduction or is it possible to recieved a partial deduction with one of the aluminum replacements?

I( know your ? is saomewhat about points , i just purchased ajn alum for mine 427 / 435 69 stick and be assured dewiitts is the spot , i personally have tried to keep the car super correct but the cooling is just well , much better withj the alum call him their inexpensive in reallity whats 500 scoots and a slip in , im going to polish mine .

John, My 69 435 was running hot so I had the original radiator recored and the fan clutch rebuilt. I also made sure that I had all the correct shroud seals in place. The difference was like night and day. I believe the brass radiator should do the job quite well providing it has adequate flow.

My current core, while not new, is clear. I have a new shroud and all new seals. The car has AC. Here in SC, the system is simply not efficient enough. It will not boil over, but over time, in traffic, the coolant slowly leaks by the cap and the temp will rise. As long as I'm moving, no problems. The efficiency of the aluminmum RAD is much higher. I want to keep it as close to the original config as possible. Not sure how this would affect judging...??? Full/partial deduction.

John - you state your current core is clear. Are you sure there aren't restrictions in the crossflow? I would talk to Tom DeWitt in detail, he has the correct cores now to use your original tanks. Also, don't discount your timing curve etc could be at fault, it is pretty easy to heat up the exhaust port area in the heads and increase the coolant temperature. Frequently there are multiple reasons for running hot. If it were me, I would find out all the parameters and stay stock with the parts. It ran cool originally, it should now too with everything correct......just my 2 cents....Craig

John You're describing the symptoms I had with my 327/340 when I thought my cooling system wasn't "doing the job" either. Turns out, after replacing a perfectly good fan clutch I found that the temp gauge/sender were off. The temp was actually about 30 degrees cooler than the gauge indicated. If you haven't already checked the coolant temp (or the gauge), it might be worth the effort. Good Luck Les
