Is a special tool really needed to put new door springs in the hinges? I have a 1970 corvette. If not, is their a trick to it? Hate to buy the tool for a one time installation. Thanks for the help.

You can install the spring without the tool. The time and effort involved make it well worth the price to buy the tool.
I spent close to 2 hours trying to install the spring without the tool then I gave up and bought the tool and it took all of 5 minutes. For me it was well worth the price. You can make the tool from an old screw driver but for the price it is hardly worth the effort. -

Don, you don't need the tool if you want to take the door off, and the hinge out of the door. Better use some spray paint to mark your hinge positions, so you can get the door back in the same position. Of course, the tool could begin to look pretty cheap after that. You might has well replace the hinge pin bushings while you have it apart.Comment

I made a tool a number of years ago. I took a large Craftsman screwdriver, heated it with a torch and used a vise to bend it. You can look at a picture of the tool sold in many catalogs to help judge what it should look like.Comment
