    1963 Oil Pan

Is the correct pan for 1963 H.P. engines available through the General or is it a swap meet item? Thanks, Dennis

    Re: 1963 Oil Pan

    Dennis------

The original oil pans used for all 1963 Corvettes were GM #3820000 for 250/300 hp and GM #3820001 for 340/360 hp. These same pans continued to be used for ALL Corvette small blocks right through 1974. Both pans were discontinued by GM in about 1976 and were replaced by GM #360866 and 359942, respectively. These pans are identical except for the radius of the front oil pan seal surface which requires these pans to use the 75+ style oil pan front seal (or, a gasket kit which includes said seal). Unfortunately, both of these pans were also discontinued in the last 3 or 4 years. They are difficult to find in either good used or NOS form. Part of the reason is that all of the above-referenced pans were used ONLY for Corvette applications so they can't be found on other Chevrolet models.

Currently, they are not reproduced, but they may be in the future. As you say, a swap meet might be a good place to find one, especially if it's a more-or-less Corvette-oriented event. Otherwise, they can be found from time-to-time on eBay. NOS examples of the 3820000 and 38200001 are very rare and they bring $500+. The 360866 and 359942 bring about $300 in NOS condition. An NOS GM #359942 "sold" a few weeks ago on eBay for $710.

Are the part numbers on the oil pan anywhere? If not any easy way to identify them? Thanks.

No part numbers will be found anywhere on any of these pans. They can only be identified by being familiar with the configuration of the pans. There are no other Chevrolet small block pans that are configured anywhere near similar to the 63-74 Corvette pans.

What difference, if any is the 62 oil pan?

The 56-62 oil pans are completely different. Actually, there were quite a few slightly different configurations for the C1 oil pans. However, all of these pans have a "3 step" configuration and all have a drain plug mounted on the BOTTOM of the rear sump.

The 63-74 Corvette oil pans are a "2 step" configuration, with the rear, deep step being longer for the 3820001/359942 pans. Both of these pans have the oil drain mounted on the lower, rear surface of the pan. Some passenger car pans have the oil drain in this area, too, so you can't go by the rear drain. NO 1963-74 Corvette pans used a side mounted oil drain like later Corvette pans and many passenger car pans.

As always thanks for the information. After spending the last decade restoring old wooden boats I have come back to Corvette's. it is always nice to have the brain "refreshed" with info that is stored there but not always readily available.
