    Smelly '66 A/C

    All,

Now that Summer is upon us, I am using the A/C in my '66 Coupe. It works great, but the next morning when I go to start the car, I am greeted with a funky, musty smell. This goes away after I run the car a short time, but is there something I can do to kill the funk? I have heard that one can spray Lysol into the system to kill mildew and germs, but I'm not sure exactly where to spray it.

    Thanks, Alex

It usually works well if you spray it into the air intake grill in front of the windshield. Run the blower on its highest setting and the a/c on maxcool. BTW it should only take a few good squirts to work. You will have to do this several times a year if you live in a humid climate.

Odor killing spray may work temporarily, but often the real reason for 'smell' from air distribution system is trapped organic material (leaves, bugs, Etc.) that are decomposing in the duct work especially the heater core/evap grid. Not an easy job to remove and clean....

Many cars of this period have a weep hole covered with a rubber clamp under the distribution box in the engine compartment. Some cheap & easy relief can be gotten from organic particulates trapped in front side of heater core/evap grid by putting the car on a lift, removing the rubber weep bladder (if it's still there and hasn't rotted away long ago), inserting a flexible hose extention mounted on a good shop vac, and sucking debris out....
