    C3 Gas door hinge

A friend is finishing up his 68 BB and needs a gas door hinge. He has the door. He says they are hard to find as the 68 hinge was unique. Anybody here have an idea where to look? If you want to reply directly to me it's richgj3@aol.com.

    Thanks

I just looked on E-Bay and found 2 that claim to be for 68 and 69. Is my friend wrong? Are they the same?

I don't know anything special about them, other than the fact that 68 and 69 do not have the extra "helper" spring that was used from.....maybe 70-71 and up. The 68 gas door emblem is unique, using "spun" rivets to hold the emblem as opposed to the acorn nuts used in 69. Maybe other will chime in. Chuck

The 1968 Corvette fuel door bezel assembly was a little different than 69-70. Primarily, the differences related to the "spun rivets" used to attach the door to the bezel hinge. They are very minor and will not be noticed. For all practical purposes, the 69-70 bezel will work perfectly for a 1968.

Unless a used 1968 door/bezel assembly is obtained, one pretty much has to use the late 1968 to 1970 screw-type door mounting, anyway. In that case, the original 68 bezel, by itself, will be irrelevent.

          Re: C3 Gas door hinge

It is my understanding that late 68 and 69 are the same. Both had the same door and hinge assembly. Early 68 used the spun rivets on the door and spun rivets on the emblem attached to the door. I am not sure of the dates that the transition took place at. If you find an original lid and hinge in good shape, you can sort of re-attach the door but it is difficult. I did it once and you couldn't tell it apart from an original. I drilled out the old studs on the lid and replaced them with new one's and then did the spun rivet thing with a drill press. The original doors were very, very weak and would not hold up to any pressure. If you fiend is particular and wants everything, I would get both and 68 and 69 door set up and have both painted. Use the 69 door and keep the 68 on the side. Regards, Terry
