    C-3 Brake Line Replacement

I have a '72. I am thinking of replacing the entire brakeline system, hard pipe and hoses. The brake line is all original. Can this be done without a body lift?

    Thanks

    Bill,

Yes, it can be done, but the difficulty will depend on whether or not you have an automatic or manual transmisssion, and if you have access to a lift.

I did this last winter on my Dad's 72, but I used our lift and I couldn't imagine doing it if I hadn't been able to remove (or should I say lower) the transmission crossmember. Look at where the line goes through along the driver's side frame rail and you'll understand. Otherwise it was not extremely difficult.

      Bill,

Yes, it can be done. As Patrick said, it is difficult. I did it to my 1970 Corvette (4spd) without a lift a few years ago. (It would have been nice to have one though.) I recommend using the standard steel line, not stainless. My original lines lasted 30 years and new steel lines ought to last another 30. If necessary, they are easier to bend and unbend if that is how you receive them. One tip, where I could not access the bolt(s) to remove the clip(s) that hold the line along the frame, I cut it with a dremel tool and pryed the clip apart to allow the line to come out. Upon installing the new line, I just pressed it back in place and touched up the clip with paint. Another tip, I bought the lines at a swap meet (Carlisle) so I didn't have to bend/unbend them to the correct shape.
