my 71 LS5 4 speed is hard to shift into 2nd gear after the car is driven for 30 minutes or more. it does not grind, shifter linkage has been sprayed down, fluid has been changed to synthetic, shifts fine when cold, clutch grabs near bottom of pedal, car runs at 160-180 degrees. I have been told it is could be internal. Any ideas before i remove the trans. shifter and linkage are original

Re: 2nd gear shifting when hot
The problem may be in the shifter alignment. There was an article in Corvette Fever or Vette magazines over a year ago on how to properly align/adjust the shifter. It seemed to make a big difference in the smoothness in my 70 LS-5 shifts. Also, adjusting the shifter sounds a little easier than rebuilding the trans. It's worth a shot.

Re: 2nd gear shifting when hot
Morgan --- I notice you said that your clutch grabs near the bottom (ie. when pedal is just off the floor). The cheap/quick 2 minute check is to bring the clutch engage point up one or 2 turns on the push-rod. If problem is still there, then investigate the other actions you mentioned.
I too like a low pedal, but I have the opposite problem; when the engine's cold I sometimes have to forget 2nd gear for the first few blocks.- Top

Re: 2nd gear shifting when hot
I assume the problem you're relating is during upshifting. If so, the problem is very likely clutch adjustment, as has been pointed out ther. If the problem is downshifting (only) then likely the Brass synchronizer rings need replaced in the trans.- Top

Re: 2nd gear shifting when hot
I'm with Wayne - your synchros are probably pretty worn, and you're not getting enough clutch disengagement to let them operate freely. Re-adjust the clutch and raise the engage point to see if the problem goes away.- Top
