    handlaid or press molded fender

I am in the process of restoring a 1961 and need to replace the top section of the left fender. I currently have a hand laid part that will fit fine. Should I purchase a press molded fender section or try to sand and color the bottom section of the hand laid fender. What percentage of the inner fender will be covered with undercoating? Other than a few part, most of the original 61 parts are with the car.

    Thanks! Ray

This is a personal judgement call based on your 'pride' level during restoration. Original panels were press molded and do have different a slightly different texture in comparison to hand laid panels. Some have so much pride in their restoration they insist on using nothing but matching panel segments from original Corvette scrap yard cars.

On how much undercoating was in the wheel well, well this varied with the phase of the moon! I've seen some original cars where the applicator was in such a hurry that there's little more than than a 1-3 inch wide 'dribble' of undercoating erratically centered in the wheel well. I've also seen other cars where undercoat coverage bordered on excessive, with sags/drips/runs 'splotched' to the front/rear and inboard/outboard extremes.

My guess is who was on the job that day, what the quality guys were writing up and how closely he/she was being supervised generated the differences in undercoat application. But, I've yet to see a job that appeared neat/orderly as if the wheel well was hand taped to mask the edges as I HAVE seen on a number of restored Corvettes I've judged....

Re: handlaid or press molded fender

        Ray,
In 1960 Chevrolet supplied to the dealer from whom I had order it, a hand laid up right front fender. (yea lots of repro's parts available back then ;-) !) I used it from the top of the wheel well forward which included the headlight surround. If your handlaid fender is made with a top surface of woven cloth, you may find (as I did) it extremely hard to get rid of the woven pattern showing through the final paint. Look at a fairly original '53-'55 and very likely you'll likely see the pattern I'm speaking of. Regards,

          Re: late 54 & 55 no cloth

A mid 54 may show cloth on some panels , but late? 54 and ALL 55's never had any, those Corvettes panels were by then pressed.

Ray - My suggestion would be to use a press molded part. All effort and basic expense will be the same, or close, but the press molded part will duplicate the original piece. That will be the last time you will have to visit the issue.
            Best, Dennis

Agree withn roy( our 54 vin 2184, original unhit body consists of a mixture of hand laaid and press molded panels) also agree with dipstick in that a press molded panel is the only way to go if you wish to paint and forget it thereafter.mike
