63/64 dana rear??!!

hello all,

i was in my local vette shop today and was speaking with the owner. He claims he has a 64 vette and was talking about rebuilding the rear end and that he needed a special tool "because the 64 vette has a Dana rear end". I have never heard of a dana in a vette and told the owner that, but he insisted that a few 63 and 64's did in fact come with dana rear ends. any comments?

All 1963 and 64 Corvettes originally used a Dana-manufactured positraction assembly. The remainder of the differential unit was manufactured by GM as were all 65-79 Corvette differential assemblies. 1965 through 1979 Corvettes used an Eaton-manufactured positraction unit.

Beginning in 1980, Dana started supplying the complete differential assembly for Corvettes and this continued through the 1996 model year for ALL Corvettes.

agree with joe; additionaly, the Dana is inferior to the Eaton in that the Dana's Posi case is prone to breakaing.My wife, who is much easier on her 63 vet than i, managed to fracture the posi case under a light load. When it fracture a full 360 degrees, its time to call the roll-back. If one is rebuilding a 63 or 64 differential, i'd suggest using the eaton posi case. judges can't see it. mike

Back in 1967 I knew a person who bought the pristine 63 fuel injected coupe from the local car lot. The rear end failed during use of the high performance horsepower available and he had to replace it.
