What are the specific differences between the 60 and the 61-2 aluminum bell housings? I've never seen the 2 side by side to compare them.

The only difference between the 2 bellhousings (other than casting number, of course) is the size of the clutch fork opening. The 61-62 has a significantly larger opening. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Difference between 60 and 61-2 alum bell housi
Thank you very much. I DID know that, but, if there were any other differences, I was unaware of them. It seems strange that the hole changed for 61, then changed again later on for the full enclosure (63-later) housings. As best I can tell, the 55-62 iron and 60 alum housings have the same size fork hole. I have a 60 alum on my 56 Vette (I don't remember the casting # and can't see it because it is covered up by the tranny) and the one I got at the swap meet Fri is the 553 for a 61-62.
Do you know what the 60 casting # is?- Top

The 1960-only aluminum bellhousing was GM casting #3764591.
The 1955 to 1959 CORVETTE cast iron, 1955-57 passenger cast iron, and 1960 CORVETTE do, indeed, have the same size clutch fork hole. However, I'm not sure about the 58-62 cast iron passenger car cast iron bellhousing. I think that it may have had the same size hole as the '553' aluminum bellhousing. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
