'67 Steering Mast Jacket Color....

I have the entire steering column out of the car; I'm going to paint it tomorrow. The '67 NCRS Judging Manual states that the portion of the mast jacket visible in the engine bay should be a semi-gloss black. If you happen to have a black interior, it does NOT state what shade of black should be on the mast jacket on the inside of the car, but I assume it would be semi-gloss also.

I just want to be certain, since the dash is painted semi-flat. If this is not correct, please enlighten me. Thanks PT

The 67 dash should be natural black fiberglass they were not painted. I have a picture of my mast it's not great but it's all I got on file.

is the mast jacket color a semigloss paint or a semiflat? I can't tell from your picture. As far as the dash is concerned, the Judging Manual says "the dash shall be painted the same color as the radio speaker grill". I take this to say all the fiberglass dashes were painted, no matter what color the interior was, no? PT

The mast jacket was painted the same semi-gloss black top to bottom (at Saginaw Steering Gear); the fiberglass dash panels were painted interior color, loose (separate from the car) before they were installed later on the Trim Line.

Judging Manual is wrong

Patrick,it is my opinion that the mast is semi gloss black covered in the lower section by a plastic sleeve as seen in the photos of my original car.
"Judging Manual says "the dash shall be painted the same color as the radio speaker grill" It is wrong.
The dash as was pointed out to me by Jerry Bramlett is natural black fiberglass as shown in the photos of my original 67 dash. Follow the link and click on TECH Forum for additional pictures.

Kevin, I believe you, but I thought my question was about the color of the mast jacket. Since my fiberglass dash is already painted semiflat black, it seems like a moot point to me, since I'm not going to mess with it. I don't care about losing points. Thanks for the pictures. PT

My bad, I saw your referance to the dash in the first post and went with it. Hey judges what do you say?
As you saw in the pictures there is only a small portion of the mast exposed, but enough to see it is semi gloss, the bottom as I stated is covered by a plastic sleve.

------1st.The plastic sheath is about half way down the steering shaft.It does not extend thru the firewall to the lower part of the shaft.You are correct on the semi-gloss black all the way from one end of the shaft to the other.Krylon semi-gloss is just about right.
------2nd.I must be mis-reading your posts somehow,but I have re read them several times,and Im still confused.I dont think Jerry B would have told you that the center dash is natural,un-painted black fiberglas,because that just isnt true,and hes way too sharp a resto guy to have made that mistake.All center dashes from 63 to 67 are painted.In their natural unpainted state they were various shades of bare fiberglas,but they were never black fiberglas.If you have a black dash in yours and look at some part of the backside you will see that it is grey!
