I'm putting together a '67 BB. I have both a plastic and metal oil pump drive shaft connector. Shall I assume the metal one to be more "fool proof" and install it?

Believe it or not, some big blocks DID use a nylon (plastic) retainer.
1966 through 1971 Corvettes with L-36, L-68, and LS-5 used oil pump drive shaft GM #3860365. I THINK that this shaft DID use a nylon retainer. If so, it was pre-installed on the shaft and could not be ordered seperately. I don't think that it's the same as the small block nylon retainer.
For 1972-74 ALL PRODUCTION big blocks did use an oil pump drive shaft with nylon retainer. This shaft is GM #3998289. It also replaced the earler GM #3860365 described above when that piece was discontinued from SERVICE in August, 1971. The retainer for the 3998289 shaft is nylon and is supplied with the shaft. No pin is used to retain it and the retainer was never available seperately, as far as I know.
1965-71 Corvettes with L-78, L-72, L-71, L-88, ZL-1 and LS-6 used an all metal shaft of GM # 3865886. This shaft used a steel retainer which is pinned to the shaft. This shaft can be used on any big block, although it was not origianlly supplied on all. I'm sure that this is the one that you're familar with.
I recommend using the GM #3865886 or aftermarket versions of it manufactured by ARP, Milodon, and others. I use the ARP piece.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment

the only one i ever saw was #3865886,i guess i never messed with the stock stuff and every crate hi per engine that we took apart had the all steel one.Comment
